I too think Fringe is more of a character study than anything else - Walter's development has shown us that, and I think we're onto Peter now as the second act, while I think Olivia will be the third and final act of the show. But the minor/supporting characters really help flesh the main characters out in interesting ways, while keeping the show in its science roots. JJ Abrams needs to stick with this show :)
