Inception - i am the hero of this story (don't need to be saved)
Mal fic. You GUYS. MAL FIC!
There are things about Inception that I've never said, because that post about Inception is still lying half-written in my Google Docs and I'm not particularly interested in going back to it, but here's something: as much I love Arthur and Eames (and the actors who play them) and love the things that they do, are, say, etc., my favourite character, the one I'm most interested in, has to be Mal, because I think she's the perfect character.
I mean, she is the heart of this movie (not just emotionally, but also in that she's part of the bigger conflict?), but she's also the villain; she's the love interest, and she's created. I love that she's the "femme fatale", but that's almost fully because of what Cobb's conscious makes of her, because she's dead. She's evil for a reason, which is only partly herself, and your heart breaks for her and for him because both of them can kind of destroy each other. That's just beautiful and incredibly complex, and I love the detail of it - what she was, what she is, how she came to be what she is - what formed her and created her. She's probably the thing about this movie that I'm most interested in - not the dream scape or the mechanics of dreams, but the fact that this set-up allowed the creation of a character like her where by logic she must be ill-defined but she isn't. She's fascinating.
And Marion Cotillard is equally perfect - tortured but relentless and creepy and all in all, completely heartbreaking. I don't think this movie is going to get all the acting nominations people seem to heap on it, but if it gets any recognition at all, I think Marion should get love for what she does in this small but hugely-affecting role, because she's supposed to motivate and scare Cobb, and she's supposed to make us feel something, and she does that. This is literally the first thing I've watched her in, OK (her adorable interviews with Craig Ferguson don't count). And I found her magnificent.
Oh plus it's gorgeously-written, so. Basically: read it, please.
