Day #13: Favorite childhood show

Even Stevens

Childhood before I was 7 or 8 had me and my sister on Cartoon Network all the time, because Nick had people getting kissy (I was a sheltered Indian child living in Asia - kissing was something I got freaked out by) and we didn’t get Disney here till I was around 10, so...Scooby Doo, or something.

But after that - Even Stevens! Honestly, everything about this show is still really, truly good quality. I caught it by accident again late last year and enjoyed every second of the episode I was watching. It’s so good! It's funny and warm, and smart, and the "concept" episode they had with the musical is probably one of the best of any TV show, because the music is catchy, the songs are well-placed, and the characters all fit really well.

- not 1968, but a year later!

And the sweet brother-sister moments made me happy. I love that they got frustrated with each other, but always pulled through for the other in the end, which is the kind of sibling relationship that I've never seen in any other TV show, but is mostly the kind of relationship I have with my sister. (/sap) My favourite scene of the two of them is maybe the one from an episode where their storylines don't overlap at all, but near the end, Louis finds Ren sitting alone by the staircase as she waits for a grade (and she's hoping it's an A) and he just kind of gently, quietly chides her for pushing herself to be perfect, when no one really is. and it's so small but natural. (Disney makes me so sappy, oh god.) It's this sort of thing that makes me happy I was watching good TV when I was younger. I'm not trying to sound old when I say that I can't think of any current kids' shows that could hold up like that over time.

Day #14: Favorite male character

Mal Reynolds

Mal Reynolds, Firefly - ah! This character person! He’s stubborn and sometimes a douche and very truly, fully affected by the things he’s gone through (so sad and a bit broken, too) - but at the same time he had a sense of humour, he was smart about the things he had to do, incredibly loyal, a little bit romantic (and not in the lovey-dovey kind of way), and maybe not a fantastic person but a brilliant, brilliant captain. I could watch this complex character interact with every person in the universe and not be bored - he’s just endlessly fascinating to me. I could watch him with his 'ship and not be bored.

And I adore the things he does and is, and I love that I can see clearly, in everything that he does, that he feels things strongly, deeply. And there's something about him that's so grounded, just rooted firmly in his conviction, his character. It's maybe an extension of what I love about this show - he has that background and history, and that gives him a wonderfully 3D kind of feel. I finally watched the end of Serenity recently, and the way he spoke about that ship, above love keeping you afloat...shattered me. which may be what drove me to write what I did about him here.

"You know what the first rule of flying is? Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take a boat in the air you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps her in the air when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home."

(Also, someone on Livejournal did a picspam about Indiana Jones vs. Han Solo (which is awesome, check it out), and one point is about Mal probably being the son of Han Solo, which is perfect. And my canon.)

I love Nathan Fillion and I love Castle, but Rick Castle really doesn’t give him the chance to display how great he is at doing so many things (another reason to miss Firefly, I guess). He's given too much of the goof/charm, and not enough of the darkness, even though he's so brilliant at that.

Runner-up: Jim Halpert (big surprise) - people have talked about this and said it better than I ever could, but I just think he’s simple and heartbreaking. And he was believably flawed, to me - always a little bit less-than to women he wasn’t in love with, had a tendency to withdraw, and never ever bothered to dream, in that he’s never really doing anything. I really love that about him - these are interesting shortcomings in a person. (I wish the show addressed these more.)

I'll have to hold back on Day #15 because you've seen how stupidly rambley I can get about my favourite characters. It will be even worse for this one. I bet you already know the answer to this one, though. I won't even give you any hints. Knope, I won't.

I have the next five days off for studying, and what I've decided to do is work till around 3 in the morning, wake up at 7, be productive for a while longer, because those are the quietest hours and the most my brain works. In the afternoon I'll sleep, because I get nothing done in the afternoon. Let's see how this goes!

Even Stevens! The first time I watched Transformers I kept having these mind-boggling moments where I'm like, "LOUIS IS KISSING MEGAN FOX AND FIGHTING ROBOTS, OMG" and yeah, that's pretty much the coolest crossover idea ever, ngl.

I LOVE that he's a big star now, even though I still can't pronounce his name. And he says some stupid shit from time to time (he wants to sleep with his mother? Really? That is Megan Fox-worthy word vomit right there) but he seems so competent and mature and just awesome, really. Like when he apologized for Indiana Jones. YEAH, THANK YOU, SOMEONE SAID IT. ALIENS. REALLY? REALLY.

I lovelovelove what you said about Mal and Nathan's ability to convey both the darkness and the light of the character. Yes, he's the cheeky, charming anti-hero but he's so much more than that. His humour, his anger, his love, his loyalty, his pride - fantastic. And awww Jim. I like that he's romantic without being overly saccharine about it. He just feeeeels things.

Malcolm Reynolds is my soulmate. I'm absolutely convinced of this and if I ever meet a Malcolm Reynolds, I will run away with him on his ship and happily live my life day to day. Because everything you said about him? Absolutely true. And in 14 episodes he captured my imagination in a way no other character has.

This bit about him being Han Solo's son is fun though ;)
